The Byzantine Empire

1.    Greeks made up the largest group of the Byzantine Empire -- others were Egyptian, Syrian, Arab and Jewish
2.    Constantinople became the capital city of the Empire by A.D. 500.

7.    Hagia Sophia -- the religious center of the Byzantine Empire -- one of Justinian's and the Byzantine Empire's greatest achievements
8.    Mosaic -- pictures made from small pieces of colored glass or stone
9.    Saints -- a Christian holy person
10.  Byzantine women mainly stayed home and raised children
11.  Regent -- a person who rules in place of a ruler who is either too young or too ill to govern
